#238 – Curious

Salted Wounds

She sat down, turned on the laptop. Surfed. Oh, yes, need a background picture for desktop. Wonder if artist ex-boyfriend has done anything since we broke up. Facebook. Type in his name.

W-I-L-L-I-A-M–C-L-E-M-M-E-N-S.

Up pops his page. He’s long since de-friended her. Profile picture. Are-you-fucking-kidding-me?

Anger and nausea roll over her chest. Heart beating erratic tattoos against her hyoid. Click. Click. Click, fucking-damnit-click.  Profile picture, large against the stark white of the screen. At their cafe. THEIR cafe. With the coffee. The best coffee. He is holding THEIR coffee. She took that picture.

I-HATE-YOU I-HATE-YOU I-HATE-YOU.

He loved her then. He loved her then. Now he doesn’t. THEIR cafe. She took that picture. He loved her then. You can see it in his eyes. If you look closely at those same dark eyes, you can see her reflection, her white fingers clasped around a camera. He loved her then.

Search, search. Finally. Found it. A picture he took of her. Falsely quiet, serene. She is never quiet. Never serene. He will know it is retribution. He loved her then. You can see him reflected in her eyes- his strong fingers around the lens. He loved her then.
